Schuch’s decision is particularly relevant since church organisations like the Diakonie (Protestant) or the Caritas (Catholic) are important employers within Germany: the Diakonie employs 627 000 and the Caritas 690 000 people.
These public declarations are clearly an important move and a conscious decision not to repeat history, because the Churches, especially the Protestant, didn’t distance themselves clearly from Nazism and were often rather accommodating.
P.S: Thank you for reading my pages. I'd be pleased if you'd dropped me a line some time. It'd be nice to have an idea who's out there, and maybe there are some topics you'd like me to cover.
