From poetry straight to politics: On 25 January there's a talk on Yemen in the EineWeltHaus here in Munich. The talk starts at 7.30pm, is free and will be in German.
A retired army man I know likes to memorize poetry. When asked for a sample he recited Der Asra (The Asra) by Heinrich Heine for us. A poem about impossible love, impossible because of difference in social status. I tried to find out whether a Yemeni tribe called the Asra exists, but (unsurprisingly perhaps) Heine seems to have made it up. Hearing somebody recite poetry, not in school or in the theatre, or because they consider themselves beacons of culture, but simply because they like it, creates a particular atmosphere. An atmosphere teachers and lectures ideally would like to emulate but which so often proves elusive.
