There are many interesting towns along the Frankenweg, but one I found particularly striking on the stretch we walked this time: Berching. Berching still has a complete defensive wall around the old centre. The town centre itself consists solely of century old houses, which were built in a higgledy piggledy way. The houses as well as the wall are well preserved and the small town was buzzing with life in the evening. After a fantastic dinner at the local Greek restaurant we walked along the entire wall at night and I got an idea of what it meant to be living inside the town walls during the Middle Ages, the sense of security it provided.
The Frankenweg is well-marked and you need no more than this map and the brochure published by the Franken tourist office. I for one really like going from one place to the next rather than staying put. Summer is such a joy for the senses: the brightness of the colours, the intensity of the smells (like pine trees and their resin). Have a lovely summer!
P.S.:
The perfect song in this context is “Start Walking” by Natalie Williams. This version is one of my all time favourites.
