Germany produces about one third of the world’s hops and 80% of the hops is grown in the Hallertau. To give you an idea of the landscape, here’s a short video in German (3mins) and an extended version in English (18mins) on hops growing in the area. The hops is exported to 150 countries.
The Hallertau’s undulating hills are perfect for hiking and there’s lot to discover: e.g. towns like Pfaffenhofen and Schrobenhausen or the Abbey at Scheyern. One of the advantages of the region is that the area isn’t overrun with tourists in the summer. Walking along the paths you will meet mainly locals and see a modern yet less bustling side of Bavaria.
Burghardt’s guide offers short and long hikes (1.15hrs-7.30hrs) with most hikes ranging between 2-4hrs. The guide offers 50 different walks. Although several starting and end points can be reached by train, for the majority of the hikes you either need a car or it is advisable.
